What are the Symptoms of Eczema?

Eczema is a general term for a number of conditions related to non-contagious inflammation of the skin. The symptoms can occur as a brief reaction and may be present for only a few hours or days. In other cases, the symptoms persist over a longer period of time.

The condition is often characterized by dry, itchy skin but comes in many forms and varies from person to person. Eczema can affect people of any age, but is most common in infants and children.

You may have eczema if you have the following symptoms:

-    Itching and burning sensation of skin, which may increase during the night
-    Dry, reddish skin
-    Small raised bumps which may contain fluid and crust over when scratched open
-    Thickened, dry and scaly area of skin
-    Children/Adults: typical on face, neck and inside of knees/elbows and ankles
-    Infants/Babies: typical on forehead, cheeks, forearms, legs, scalp and neck
-    Sensitivity to cold and heat (rashes)
-    Asthma, hay fever in combination with skin irritations

Eczemas are usually quite uncomfortable but not dangerous or life threatening.

We do suggest you consult your general practitioner if the rash is weeping or bleeding as these could be symptoms of a more serious illness.
